The Filipino veterans’ denunciation of Secretary
Nicholson was caused by his opposition to the Filipino
Veterans Equity Bill.
At the April 11 Senate Veterans
Affairs Committee hearing on the Senate Filipino
Veterans Equity Bill (S. 57) sponsored by Sen. Daniel
Inouye (D-Hawaii), Nicholson directed his Deputy
Undersecretary for Benefits Ronald R. Aument to testify
that the VA was opposed to the bill because the benefit
costs would be about "$510 million in the first year and
more than $4 billion over ten years."

Immigration Bill
WASHINGTON, D.C., May 24, 2007 – U.S. Senator Daniel K. Akaka
(D-HI)
announced that his “Filipino Veterans Family Reunification Act”
(S.AMDT.1186) was agreed to today by the full Senate as an amendment to
the immigration bill.
The final vote was 87-9. The amendment was cosponsored by Majority
Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Majority Whip Richard Durbin (D-IL), fellow
Hawaii Senator Daniel Inouye (D), and Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA),
Patty Murray (D-WA), and Maria Cantwell (D-WA).
The debate over the full
immigration bill is expected to continue into early next month. ...more |

The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) announced that
Northwest Christian Academy student Ehren Christian Napone Sixon from
Miami, Florida has been selected for membership. Ehren is the the son of
Carmen Napone, originally from Cavite, Philippines.
NSHSS recognizes top scholars in the nation and invites only those
students who have achieved superior academic excellence. Claes Nobel,
NSHSS Founder and Chairman and senior member of the Swedish Nobel family
